The Thor Fiber Optic Power Meter is a versatile handheld instrument designed for precise fiber optic testing. Essential for fiber-optic installations, it measures end-to-end optical loss across eight standard WDM and CWDM wavelengths: 850nm, 980nm, 1300nm, 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm, 1625nm, and 1650nm. With universal ST, FC, and SC connectors, it offers convenience and adaptability for various applications.

This tool is invaluable for saving time during fiber optic installations and applications. It measures optical power at any junction point, allowing you to assess the power emitted by fiber optic transmitters. By using a short fiber optic jumper, you can measure the power directly from the transmitter, and after connecting all fibers, take measurements at the fiber’s end. This helps determine the difference between the transmitter power and the receiver power.

Fiber optic cables have an insertion loss of 0.35db for 1310nm and 0.25db for 1550nm, with potential losses at connections (about 0.1db). Additional losses may occur due to dirty connectors, fiber bends, or optical splitters. By measuring the optical level at the receiver, you can verify that the fiber is functioning correctly and losses are within expected ranges. You can also ensure the power at the receiver does not exceed the optical receiver sensitivity.

Consider this scenario: if the TX output power is -2dBm at 1310nm over a 15Km distance (predicted insertion loss = 5.25db), the receiver measurement should be -7.25dBm. If the loss exceeds -7.25 ±2db, there might be an optical loss issue. If the receiver sensitivity is greater than -7.25dBm, the link will perform optimally.
